Christmas is just around the corner and the last groceries for Christmas Eve have to be done. The first corona lockdown caused empty shelves for a short time. For this year’s Christmas Eve, the EU MP Alexander Bernhuber (ÖVP) and the Lower Austrian Farmers’ Union Director Paul Nemecek give the all-clear on eXXpressTV: “It is not a matter of course that our Christmas table is richly set. Our farmers secure the regional supply of the population with food of the best quality ”, emphasizes Nemecek to eXXpress presenter Tanja Pfaffeneder.
Bernhuber draws a Europe-wide comparison: “As current data from Eurostat show, Austria is one of the leaders when it comes to security of food supply.” For beef and pork, the level of self-sufficiency in Austria is 115 and 130 percent, respectively. Sufficient milk (103 percent), butter (100 percent), cheese (93 percent) and potatoes (99 percent) is also provided.
Tanja Pfaffeneder talks to the two studio guests about the general importance of regional supplies, the competition from large corporations, the origin of the meat in the domestic refrigerated shelves and the challenges of the Corona crisis.
