The NASA probe “Parker Solar Probe” flew through the outer atmosphere of the sun and was the first spacecraft to “touch” it, according to the US space agency. The probe has examined particles and magnetic fields, NASA said. The first flight through the sun’s atmosphere took only a few hours. Further flights are planned.
NASA manager Thomas Zurbuchen spoke of a monumental moment and a remarkable achievement. “This milestone will not only give us a deeper look at how the sun was formed and how it affects the solar system, but everything we learn about our own star will teach us more about the stars in the rest of the universe.”
The seven-ton probe was protected by a twelve-centimeter-thick carbon armor. The missile the size of a small car is supposed to withstand more heat and radiation than any other flying object before.
