Elegant trams, elegant people, all in peace and quiet, on the move in the center of Vienna without any haste, plus many fiakers, a few cars, men with mustaches and hats, and also women, mostly with hats – these moving images of Vienna shortly after The turn of the century (1905 to 1915) are now brought to life by a video and uploaded to Youtube. They don’t make a seemingly distant Vienna seem so distant anymore. The Ring, the State Opera, the Graben or Schwarzenbergplatz appear strangely familiar there.
The previously blurred and shaky black and white photos were colored using the latest technology. The pace has also been corrected. The classic silent film was still hand-shot. That is why at that time you worked with a lower and irregular frame rate, which is why the pace of the screen action was not right and too fast. That has also been corrected, which gives the recordings a calm that is not known from recordings from this time.
There were no escalators in Vienna at that time, hardly any tourists and almost no power lines, undoubtedly the fashion was different – but it is not a completely different Vienna that you experience here. Technology makes it possible.
A Dutch restoration company called “Ricks Film Restoration” made the video. On her youtube channel she brought all film recordings from all over the world before the Second World War to life in a spectacular way. A time that is still completely immersed in black and white in our memory can be observed here in an unusual way.
The manufacturers emphasize: “A lot of historical film material was digitized with outdated scanners, which resulted in shaky, weak and blurred images. Today, there is much that can be done to improve such footage with sophisticated software tools, including artificial intelligence. This includes movement stabilization, speed correction, contrast, brightness and sharpness improvement, noise suppression, dust and stain removal as well as upscaling to HD with AI and recently even coloring! “
With a view to Vienna we say: Thank you!
