At the moment the FPÖ has committed itself to the Corona issue and is pursuing a course against vaccination with radical rhetoric. In view of this development, Aufdecker journalist Gert Schmidt (EU-Infothek) and eXXpress editor-in-chief Richard Schmitt ask themselves: How will this FPÖ continue?
Schmidt recalls the times of Jörg Haider, when the FPÖ stood for the hard-working and able. But what does the FPÖ stand for now? Not for freedom, says Schmidt, because with her propaganda against vaccination she restricts the lives of all people. It is no longer a party for freedom. FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl will already know how to defend the current course in the name of freedom, says Schmitt. For him it is about the freedom of choice to be able to decide for himself whether one wants to be vaccinated or not. But in view of the radical tones and the radical direction of his politics, Schmitt also wonders where this will lead in the end.
“I don’t see any goal in the current FPÖ campaign,” adds Schmidt. Actually, it is a must for every democratic party to be eligible as a ruling party. In addition, the FPÖ takes the opportunity to criticize constructively. She could also criticize the way the lockdown is handled, for example when it comes to the poor state of the catering industry, which is confronted with disproportionately strict restrictions. “So the FPÖ could take the side of the disadvantaged gastronomy, but it doesn’t.”
For Schmitt, the FPÖ takes a counter-opinion that could also be dangerous, “because even risk groups are convinced not to be vaccinated. This is risky for many people and their loved ones. That will stay pecking for a long time. This will be held against the FPÖ for a long time. ” Apparently Kickl wants to prove that he is the better FPÖ boss. “With such a radical choice of words, something begins that we don’t want,” adds Schmidt. “The FPÖ gives extreme fringe groups – whether left or right – a basis.”
