The whole of Austria is still in lockdown – including popular sport. Time and again, experts point out the problem of lockdown in sport. A lack of exercise leads to physical and psychological problems in all age groups, but especially among children and adolescents. Sport Austria has therefore written an open letter to Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein. “Although it is currently also possible to practice outdoor sports in the individual area in lockdown, this does not help hundreds of thousands of children, adolescents as well as adults and seniors who normally practice their sport in the organized and very controllable framework of the sports club,” it says in this letter.
“These 1.6 million Austrians – around 500,000 fewer than before the corona pandemic (!) – must be given the opportunity to do their regular exercise in the sports club as soon as possible,” the federal sports organization also said. According to Sport Austria managing director Gerd Bischofter and President Hans Niessl, organized sport with its 15,000 sports clubs has proven during the entire pandemic that it deals with all corona rules very responsibly. Bischofter and Niessl stated that only 0.2% of the infections were due to the entire field of sport.
Sport Austria therefore urged that organized sport, both indoors and outdoors and for all population groups, be made possible with the coming first opening step. Mückstein reacted to this open letter.
First he thanked for the frank words. Then he justified the decisions as follows: “The situation is not an easy one, the 4th wave hit Austria with full force. After many discussions, we as the federal government decided together with the federal states: We have to act, ”emphasized the health minister and also said:“ We are monitoring the numbers closely and evaluating them continuously to make all important organized sport possible again. “
