A federal judge in the US capital Washington sentenced Emma Coronel Aispuro (32) to prison. She also has to pay $ 1.5 million (around 1.3 million euros) – money that she is said to have won through drug smuggling.
The former beauty queen, who has nine-year-old twins with Guzmán, was arrested at Washington International Airport last February. She was charged with helping her husband smuggle drugs into the United States. In June she pleaded guilty to drug trafficking, money laundering and dealing with a foreign drug dealer.
The public prosecutor subsequently demanded four years in prison. Judge Rudolph Contreras credited Coronel with her admission of guilt and the fact that she was very young when she married Guzmán. The nine months she has already been in custody count towards her prison sentence.
The now convicted, who has both Mexican and US citizenship, showed remorse. “I want to express my real regret for any damage I have done,” Coronel said in court. “I am suffering from the pain I have caused my family.”
