The Swiss Confederates were not left cold: at 65 percent, the turnout was the fourth highest since the introduction of women’s suffrage in 1971. The reason for the great interest could be the increasing number of cases in Switzerland. The result paves the way for new measures. With the currently high number of cases, the focus is on the introduction of compulsory testing for people who have been vaccinated and recovered at 3G events. So what we know in Austria as the “2G + rule”. And there is something else that surely sounds familiar to us – in Switzerland, too, there is now an open discussion about compulsory vaccination.
The right-wing conservative SVP, together with several other groups, supported the referendum against the Covid Pass. They think it is inappropriate to ask for a certificate as an entry ticket. This divides the country and leads to an indirect compulsory vaccination.
The government, on the other hand, had argued that without such proof of vaccination, recovery or negative corona test, major events would have to be banned and nationwide corona-related closings would occur again.
However, when it comes to tightening the measures, the SVP is also disregarding its vote defeat. “There must be no 2G, no vaccination of children, a mandatory vaccination is out of the question,” writes the party in a message. The SVP has already submitted proposals for these demands, which will also be discussed in parliament next week.
The SVP also calls for border protection to be strengthened. The new virus variant has already been detected in neighboring countries. But: “Countless cross-border commuters, travelers and illegals come to Switzerland every day. At the same time, the Swiss are not even allowed to have a coffee without a certificate, ”reports the“ Tagesspiegel ”.
