The first Sunday in Advent is just around the corner and many Austrians are now wondering whether they can buy a Christmas tree and twigs for Christmas decorations in lockdown. “Despite the lockdown, you can buy a Christmas tree or twigs. The Christmas tree is an agricultural and forestry product, therefore the sale falls under the exception rule. Of course, the FFP2 mask must be worn when buying and the two-meter distance must be observed ”, says Bauernbund President Georg Strasser.
Food producers, direct marketers, farm and self-service shops and farm-to-door sales are systemically relevant. There are no exit restrictions here. The sale of Christmas trees and ornaments can therefore take place if the hygiene measures are observed.
“Right now we have to support our farming families.”
Strasser calls for the purchase of local Christmas trees: “The Christmas tree from Austria impresses with its short transport routes. With the purchase of a fresh Christmas tree from the region, the added value also remains in Austria. Right now we have to support our farming families. ” The origin ribbon in red-white-red or the colors of the respective federal state indicate the origin of the Christmas tree.
