After the North Hospital (later renamed the Floridsdorf Clinic to save its image), the City of Vienna has now completely derailed the next major project. After examining the U2-U5 subway construction, the Vienna City Audit Office criticized the financial conduct of the major project, especially in the fourth construction phase. On the one hand, withdrawn tenders had led to a considerable delay in the start of construction, on the other hand, the costs increased significantly as a result of the new tender.
For the stage of the U5 to Frankhplatz and the U2 to Matzleinsdorfer Platz, total costs of 990 million euros (2013 price basis) were originally assumed. But that didn’t seem tenable early on. The examiners state: “To the Compliance with the total cost wase at the beginning of the projectsun other things the turn– and Aparking system Matzleinsdorfer Platz 5th U–Bahn–Expansion phase assignednet“.
The originally estimated costs have already more than doubled. Until the planned opening in January 2029, total costs of around 2.1 billion euros have already been expected. “The City of Vienna is building and there is another massive cost explosion,” criticized FPÖ City Councilor Dominik Nepp. “As with the KH Nord, money is being squandered with the U2 / U5 construction as if you had a donkey in the basement of the town hall. Obviously, the City of Vienna is not in a position to build according to the true cost, the dilettantism seems to be the program. “
Not only have the costs doubled. The original schedule has also been completely shifted. “From 2023, the U5 – which will be fully automated without a driver – will connect the new Frankhplatz / Altes AKH station with Karlsplatz,” it said in April 2016.
