Every day in 2020 there were an average of 55 knife attacks in Germany. There have already been several major incidents this year. At the end of June, a Somali man fatally stabbed three women in a department store in Würzburg. In early November, an attacker suddenly attacked passengers on a train. Propaganda videos by the terrorist organization Islamic State (ISIS) were found on Abdelrahman A, who seriously injured three men.
The suspects, both migrants who came to Germany as refugees, have been assessed by experts as mentally ill.
There are no nationwide figures on knife attacks in Germany, although the introduction to the crime statistics was decided in 2018. “Due to a lack of valid data”, an evaluation at the federal level has so far failed, reports the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), reports “Welt”.
At least 100 people were reportedly murdered in the attacks. The most common crime scenes of knife attacks include parks and streets as well as apartment buildings. Explosive: The publicly much discussed knife attacks in the past few months also often focused on the origin of the alleged perpetrators. Ten out of 16 federal states provided specific information to this newspaper. According to this, 60.4 percent of the suspects have German citizenship – 39.6 percent are not German citizens.
The police statistics also record the proportion of immigrants. This means certain non-German persons who are illegally or legally (tolerated, asylum seekers, persons entitled to protection) in Germany. These immigrants make up around 17.4 percent of the suspects. In several federal states, this includes Syrians in the first place.
