The bill for the fourth lockdown will be hefty. As the Momentum Institute has calculated, a hard lockdown will cost Austrian taxpayers 117 million euros – per day! In total, the tough measure caused damage of 2.34 billion euros for the planned period of 20 days. The new lockdown is almost as expensive as the armed forces. For comparison: The Ministry of Defense will receive 2.6 billion euros from taxpayers this year.
Even more gigantic are the costs that have so far been incurred in the wake of the corona pandemic up to May in the form of relief measures such as sales compensation or short-time work: Here the Ministry of Finance reports 37 billion euros. Overall, over the period of three years (2020 to 2022) there are fiscal corona costs of around 70 billion euros.
