Companies in the west are already counting the losses. It is now the fourth lockdown. The fact that the lockdown is coming now is particularly bitter for businesses for two reasons. On the one hand, it falls fully into the special shopping days (Black Friday, Cyber Monday). In addition, the lockdown falls during the Christmas season. According to the trade association, a hard lockdown in Upper Austria costs 140 million euros and in Salzburg 75 million euros – mind you.
“The health of the population is our top priority, but for our Upper Austrian and Salzburg dealers the fourth hard lockdown is the absolute worst case scenario. December is by far the most important month in terms of sales in the financial year. We expect a loss of sales of EUR 215 million per lockdown week in both federal states, ”emphasizes the managing director of the trade association Rainer Will. According to Will, those international online giants without a permanent establishment in Austria who hardly pay taxes and contribute to the common good will primarily benefit. The Amazon support program continues, ”says the Hanelsverband managing director
In an official broadcast by the trade association, it is said that there is understanding for the tightened measures to contain the pandemic, as the number of corona infections has recently risen sharply in both federal states. According to the trade association, however, one should start with those factors that have been shown to have an effect on the infection process. “In any case, further tightening in trade is not one of them, because trade was and is not a corona hotspot,” said an official statement.
The trade association is now demanding rapid financial support from politicians in order to secure the thousands of jobs in the domestic non-food trade in the long term with a loss bonus NEW. In addition to the NEW failure bonus, which should take effect at short notice, the tried and tested set of aids is still needed, in particular the Corona short-time work, but also the hardship fund for individual companies and loss compensation.
“The shops remain closed in the lockdown, but the running costs such as personnel and rent continue to gallop in full. Job security must go hand in hand with fighting pandemics. We therefore demand targeted economic aid that can be applied for unbureaucratically and paid out promptly. The most important thing is a loss bonus NEW for ALL affected companies, which uses the sales from the pre-crisis year 2019 as the basis for calculation“, appeals Trade association– Managing Director Rainer Will.
