Rapid does not want to rush into finding the new head coach. After Dietmar Kühbauer’s exit last week, the Viennese are exploring. “My concern is that you don’t make a quick shot,” said sports director Zoran Barisic on Wednesday to Sky. It is not important to make quick decisions emotionally. The interim coach duo Steffen Hofmann and Thomas Hickersberger will be on the sidelines against Altach at the weekend.
“In this position in particular, it is very important that there is a man who fits Rapid, who brings us forward in terms of sport and who can lift the club to the next level in terms of sport. Short-term decisions are anything but good, ”said Barisic. He himself did not want to hold the post on an interim basis – as apparently also requested by some people within the club. “The coaching job is not part-time and my current job is anything but a 20-hour week.”
The long-time Rapid captain Hofmann (41) – most recently assistant coach at Rapid II in the 2nd division – will be the mouthpiece of the team. The 48-year-old from Hickersberg will take over the planning and training control. The line-up will be decided by the team, emphasized Barisic. “Whereby Steffen has the final decision.”
The fact that Hofmann / Hickersberger will remain primarily responsible beyond the winter cannot be ruled out one hundred percent, however: “In terms of planning, it can be ruled out and they only exercise it on an interim basis.” Hickersberger is in possession of the UEFA Pro license and is therefore entitled to look after a club in the House of Lords on a long-term basis. Rapid is currently only in seventh place in the Bundesliga. In the Europa League, the home game against West Ham United awaits next week.
