“With the initiative for ‘Counter-Terrorism, Countering Violent Extremism and Intelligence’, the University of Krems is taking up a current social challenge,” explained Friedrich Faulhammer, Rector of the university. “The topic of ‘State security and the fight against terrorism and extremism’ is processed at the highest scientific level in research and teaching.” So far, expert opinions on the subject have mostly come from abroad. With the new research focus, which is being funded by the Ministry of the Interior for a period of five years with almost 900,000 euros, it is now intended to guarantee on-site expertise. In the long term, a separate competence center is to be created, which will then, among other things, provide advice to the new Directorate for State Security and Intelligence.
“The fact that Austria was not spared from international terrorism was painfully shown on November 2nd, 2020 – this is why it is also necessary in Austria to permanently assign the area of state security and the fight against terrorism and extremism as well as those of the intelligence services as required research ”, said Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP).
