Foreign ski vacationers whistle for travel warnings

Despite the fact that Germany declared Austria a high-risk area again from Sunday due to the increased number of infections, the local cable car managers apparently remain optimistic for the upcoming winter season. The reason: the demand is unbroken.

The demand from foreign guests for skiing holidays is “unbroken”, said ÖVP-Abg. and chairman of the professional association of cable cars in the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKÖ) Franz Hörl on Saturday. The desire of the guests to ski was very great after last winter, in which no skiing vacation was possible due to Corona, said Hörl. That would also be shown by the currently heavily frequented glacier ski areas.

The chairman of the cable car was convinced that vaccinated or convalescent people who will not be subject to major restrictions will for the most part not be deterred from a ski holiday in Austria due to the classification as a high-risk area. In addition, there are regions in the neighboring country with correspondingly high numbers of infections.

Cable car boss relies on political talks to resolve the question of quarantine regulations for children under the age of twelve

A thorn in the side is Hörl – like other tourism professionals – that the German entry regulation also provides for a quarantine regulation for children under the age of twelve. This is “quite a blow” – especially for ski resorts and businesses with a strong focus on families.

However, as far as he knows, there are currently several talks going on at the “highest political level” with Germany – led by Federal Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg, Foreign Minister Michael Linhart and Tourism Minister Elisabeth Köstinger (all ÖVP). Hörl hoped that an appropriate solution would be found. It was a “German-Austrian problem” that had to be solved. (APA / red)
