Hebein had originally planned to move the west exit of the A1 from Penzing to the other side to Hietzing, but resistance from the local population formed against this project in the form of a citizens’ initiative. The reason: the traffic would have passed residential buildings and the forest would also have had to be cleared.
Sima has now stopped the whole project without further ado, as the “Kurier” reported on Wednesday evening. Instead, the existing western exit is to be renovated from the beginning of 2023. In this way, the EIA obligation, which Hebein’s original project would probably have unnecessarily delayed for years, is no longer required.
Of course, this is not a permanent solution. In the long term, the bridge is therefore to be completely rebuilt – but not before 2040. The entrance is then to be relocated to Penzing.
