When winter tires became compulsory on November 1st, winter in western Austria also moved into the country. Despite the preparation time, some drivers were not yet prepared and were driving on high-altitude roads such as the Brenner motorway with summer tires. The result was tumultuous scenes: numerous vehicles got stuck in the evening hours on Monday and blocked the motorway. There was no getting through for the evacuation vehicles. Trucks were stopped in front of the Brenner Pass on the A13, cars were diverted via the federal highway.
On Tuesday it rains partly heavily in the east of Austria, above 900 to 1000 meters it still snows a little in the Mostviertel. The sun is shining in the west. The Zillertal reported more than 1 meter of fresh snow on Tuesday morning – from the Ötztal Alps to Upper Styria there are already 30 to 50 centimeters on the mountains. There is already around 30 centimeters of snow on the Dachstein. In the east, however, it continues to rain. Especially in Vienna and in northern Lower Austria you have to reckon with heavy rainfall today.
