The fight against the forest fire in the Rax area continues. After the fire inferno claimed an injured person on the national holiday, emergency services are now increasingly trying to fight the fire from the air. With an area of 115 hectares, it is the largest forest fire that has ever occurred in Austria. On Monday, the fire spread rapidly, from five to over 100 hectares in ten hours. 300 firefighters from 23 firefighters were on duty.
But the fire is still not under control. First, help came from Italy. On Saturday it became known that the Italian government is providing two Canadair planes. Now Slovakia has also offered help. A military machine from Slovakia was deployed on Sunday. The helicopter “gives us massive support with the extinguishing work”, said state fire brigade commander Dietmar Fahrafellner. Required water was taken from the New Danube.
Apart from the military machines, mountain rescue also plays an important role in fighting the fire. The members of the Vienna / Lower Austria mountain rescue service therefore also received support from Styria.
