Measured against the total number of transactions, the proportion of fraud remains at a low level. In 2019, 3.6 cents out of 100 euros spent with credit and debit cards were lost to fraud. According to the central bank, this is the second lowest percentage of fraud since this data was first collected in 2007.
In the vast majority of cases (80 percent), criminals used online channels or mobile transactions to shop illegally with stolen cards or card data. Fraudulent transactions at the cash register (15 percent) and at ATMs (5 percent) accounted for a significantly lower proportion of the total value of card fraud in 2019.
