Lower Austria is currently the front runner in terms of new infections: 850 new cases were reported there from Saturday to Sunday alone. The day before, the largest federal state in terms of area reported 667 new infections. According to the government’s forecast, Lower Austria could also be the first federal state to reach the critical threshold of 33 percent utilization of intensive care beds. This would bring the 5th stage of the new Corona plan into effect, which would mean that unvaccinated people have to go into lockdown. This would mean that for all those who have neither a vaccination nor an upright convalescence status, leaving their own private living area would only be permitted in exceptional cases. Basic supplies (such as shopping) or the way to work are then allowed. According to the current calculations, the probability that such a scenario will occur in Lower Austria as early as the beginning of November is 20 percent.
Who should control such a possible lockdown for unvaccinated people is meanwhile questionable. The police refuse to do this extra job. “Apparently something is stuck with the executive once again. If nothing works, the call comes for the police ”, annoyed the chairman of the red staff representation (FSG), Hermann Greylinger, in the“ Krone ”. “Such a control is practically impracticable,” says the black staff representative Reinhard Zimmermann (FCG). “If, for example, there were 150 cars in the parking lot of a hardware store and some of the 300 or so people were to be checked at random, this arbitrary test by colleagues would not help at all.”
