Are the corruption investigators actually playing for time? This could put the ÖVP under pressure in the long term, because 2023 is a super election year in the house. In four federal states, citizens come to the ballot box: Lower Austria, Tyrol, Salzburg and Carinthia. With the exception of the latter, all are firmly in the hands of the ÖVP – but concerns about the growing influence of the ongoing investigations on the election campaign are growing within the ÖVP.
In the federal states in particular, there is dissatisfaction with the current situation, one hears from ÖVP circles. There they are now asking for a quick clarification, by spring at the latest. It is probably also about the question of whether or not Sebastian Kurz will be charged. He himself denies the allegations and emphasizes that he also hopes for quick results. Otherwise a political earthquake could threaten the countries.
